Collection details

A staircase is more than just a connection between floors—it is often one of the first architectural features people notice when entering a home. Well-planned staircase lighting enhances safety, adds visual interest and creates a striking focal point that transforms the entire entrance. Whether you have a compact stairway or a dramatic double-height stairwell, choosing the right lighting can elevate the character of your home.

At Eden Lighting, we offer a carefully curated collection of staircase lighting designed for homes across New Zealand. Our range includes elegant chandeliers, multi-drop pendant lights, modern ring lights, linear pendants, wall lights and stair step lights, making it easy to find a solution for every type of staircase. From contemporary homes with clean architectural lines to classic interiors that call for timeless elegance, our lighting collection is selected to complement a wide variety of styles.

Lighting a staircase requires both careful planning and thoughtful design. Large feature lights create a stunning centrepiece in high-ceiling spaces, while wall lights and step lights improve visibility and provide a welcoming atmosphere after dark. By combining decorative and functional lighting, you can create a space that is safe, comfortable and visually impressive throughout the day and evening.

For over 15 years, Eden Lighting has helped homeowners, architects and interior designers throughout New Zealand select lighting for staircases of every size. Many of our products are available from local NZ stock for fast nationwide delivery, and a wide selection can be viewed in our three Auckland showrooms. Every lighting product is independently tested and certified to meet NZ/AU electrical standards, ensuring lasting quality, safety and reliability.

Staircase Lighting Buying Guide

How do I choose lighting for my staircase?

Start by considering the height of the space, the width of the staircase and the style of your home. Lighting should provide adequate visibility while also complementing the architecture of the stairwell.

Which lights work best for staircases?

Popular choices include:

  • Staircase Chandeliers

  • Multi-Drop Pendant Lights

  • Ring Pendant Lights

  • Linear Pendant Lights

  • Wall Lights

  • LED Step Lights

  • Feature Ceiling Lights

Using a combination of decorative and functional lighting creates the best overall result.

What lighting is suitable for a high ceiling?

Homes with high ceilings or double-height stairwells often benefit from large chandeliers or cascading pendant lights that fill the vertical space and create a dramatic visual impact.

How high should a staircase pendant light be installed?

The hanging height depends on the ceiling height and staircase layout. The light should remain a prominent feature while maintaining safe clearance above people using the stairs. For multi-storey stairwells, professional installation planning is recommended.

Should staircase lighting be dimmable?

Yes. Dimmable lighting allows you to create a welcoming atmosphere in the evening while providing brighter illumination when needed for cleaning or everyday use.

What colour temperature is recommended?

  • Warm White (3000K): Creates a welcoming and elegant atmosphere.

  • Neutral White (4000K): Offers balanced lighting suitable for contemporary homes.

  • Cool White (6000K): Typically used only where brighter functional lighting is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best light for a staircase?

The best solution depends on the size of the space. Chandeliers and pendant lights are ideal for stairwells with higher ceilings, while wall lights and step lights improve visibility and safety along the staircase.

Can I install a chandelier in a stairwell?

Yes. Stairwells with generous ceiling height are one of the most popular locations for statement chandeliers, creating an impressive entrance and drawing the eye upward.

How many pendant lights should I use in a staircase?

For tall stairwells, multi-drop pendants with several suspended lights often provide the most balanced appearance. The exact number depends on the dimensions of the space and the desired visual effect.

Are LED step lights necessary?

While not essential, LED step lights improve visibility at night and add a modern architectural touch. They are especially useful for families with children or older adults.

Should staircase lighting match the rest of the home?

It doesn't need to be identical, but choosing finishes, materials or design details that complement nearby lighting creates a more cohesive interior.

Do your staircase lighting products comply with New Zealand electrical standards?

Yes. Every staircase lighting product sold by Eden Lighting is independently tested and certified to comply with NZ/AU electrical standards, and all required SDoC documentation is available.

Can I view staircase lighting before purchasing?

Yes. Visit one of our three Auckland showrooms to explore a wide range of staircase lighting and compare different sizes, finishes and hanging styles.

Do you deliver staircase lighting throughout New Zealand?

Yes. We offer fast nationwide delivery, with many staircase lighting products available from local New Zealand stock for quicker dispatch.
